Frequently asked questions.

What is RN Psychotherapy?

As per the Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA), there are certain regulated professions that are allowed to practice psychotherapy with clients – one of these being nursing.  As a Registered Nurse who is registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), I must identify myself as an RN Psychotherapist when practicing the controlled act of psychotherapy.

My CNO registration number is # 11456408.

Do I need a referral or diagnosis from a doctor to see you?

NO!  I believe that you are the best judge of how you are feeling.

I was told by the Perinatal Mental Health Program that I wasn’t eligible for their program.  Can I still come to you for help?

YES!  A simple survey is not a fair indicator of what you are feeling internally.

Unfortunately, our current health care system does not have the capacity or funding to adequately address the needs of our community.

Mothers need to be seen and cared for in a much better way then what we currently have.  The current system is failing families, and this is why I am so passionate about what I do.  We need this to change!

Do you only see postpartum clients?

I encourage you to book a Free discovery call with me to discuss what area you would like to work on.  NLP techniques are extremely versatile, and I truly love what it can do for people!

I do offer therapy and coaching for all Women and Mothers.  I love empowering women and watch them gain such clarity and confidence in their lives!

That being said,

The reason I have chosen to focus my practice on Perinatal Mood Disorders is because of the lack of Postpartum support the Public Health System offers.  Along with my own experience, I chose to focus on Perinatal Mental Health because unfortunately, 1 in 4 women in Canada experience symptoms of a Perinatal Mood disorder.  These statistics were from a 2019 survey by “StatsCanada” and I’m sure that number is a lot higher today considering the pandemic we lived through!!

I would like to proceed with therapy but am concerned about the financial strain it might have on me and my family.  Do you offer sliding scale prices?

Yes!  I would be happy to offer sliding scale prices to those clients who need it.  I would like to make these services as accessible as possible for our community!

Will my Nurse Psychotherapy sessions be covered by my private health insurance and benefits?

update - Thanks to ongoing advocacy we are starting to see clients have their sessions covered by benefits! I am happy to report that several companies have officially included nurse psychotherapy in their list of covered services!! Please check that your plan includes “nurse psychotherapy” having registration with the college of nurses.

Please note - currently I am registered and can direct bill through NIHB and Blue Cross.

Original - Myself and other nurse Psychotherapists have been advocating for benefit providers to update their policies to include “Nurse Psychotherapy”.  We are currently working with the RNAO (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario) to advocate for this change.  We hope that one day soon this will change and clients won’t have any issues accessing their benefits for nurse psychotherapy.

What is NLP and how is it different from other therapies?

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is considered a somatic therapy.  It is different from cognitive and behavioural therapies as the techniques focus on what we call “the unconscious mind”.

The unconscious mind is the part of the mind that is not in our awareness.  All learning, behaviour and beliefs occur in the unconscious mind.  Without awareness of this part, we can be left feeling confused, frustrated or stuck.

So,

If all learning, behaviours, and beliefs occur in the realm of the unconscious mind, then that means all CHANGE must occur in the unconscious mind.

NLP allows you to reprogram your unconscious mind so that you can react, behave and feel what YOU want.  It provides clarity, choice and empowerment in a way that will serve and benefit you in your future goals and aspirations.

The company I was educated through (Inspired Outcomes) is an evidence-based facility and their Founder, Allen Kanerva, has an over 90% success rate in his use of trauma-informed NLP.  It is truly life changing!!
